The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is a public university established in 1965 and composed of four constituent colleges located in Zomba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe. Of the four colleges, the largest is Chancellor College in Zomba. It is part of the Malawian government educational system. The last Vice Chancellor of the now vacant post was Professor John Kalenga Saka. UNIMA celebrated its golden jubilee from the 24 to the 26 September 2015

About Medical University

The University of Malawi - -the mother university in Malawi - was founded in 1964. Teaching started on 29th September 1965 at the newly established campus which used to be an Asian Secondary School in Blantyre. Only 90 students were enrolled. By 1967, the then Institute of Public Administration at Mpemba, the Soche Hill College of Education, the Polytechnic, all these in Blantyre, and Bunda College of Agriculture in Lilongwe were incorporated as constituent colleges of the University of Malawi. 


Except Bunda College and the Polytechnic, the other colleges moved to Zomba in 1973 to form the Chancellor College campus. Kamuzu College of Nursing became the fourth constituent college in September 1979. In 1991 the College of Medicine was established in Blantyre as the fifth constituent college of the University of Malawi. One cannot conceive of higher education in Malawi without talking about the mother of all universities – the University of Malawi. 


Since its establishment, the University of Malawi has been instrumental in training and developing a reliable human resource that has gone to service various sectors of society in the country and the region. The recent boom of universities in the country has partly been possible because personnel to run such universities is readily available, a huge percentage of which is University of Malawi trained. Graduates from the University of Malawi have gone to excel in other university in the region and beyond as graduate students as well as faculty.

The College of Medicine is located in Blantyre along the Mahatma Gandhi Road, in close to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, which serves as the main teaching hospital. The College was opened in September 1991 with the aim training home grown medical doctors to carter for the country’s needs. It has a number of annexes at Zomba General Hospital, Kasungu District Hospital, Mangochi District Hospital, Rumphi District Hospital and Lilongwe Central Hospital. Its reputation in the region and beyond keeps growing and is buttressed by numerous collaborative projects its staff are involved in with such international organisations like Wellcome Trust.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission at University of Malawi

  • Candidates must have passed higher secondary examination with Science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

  • Candidates must have an aggregate of 50% in PCB or more in your 12th results.

  • Students must be 17 years or more for medical education in this university.

  • All Indian students going to study MBBS abroad have to qualify NEET exams.

Admission Process at University of Malawi
  • Step 1: Complete the online application provided by the University. or Fill out the course registration form from our website then we will be doing all the below steps .

  • Step 2: Print out the application. Send the signed form along with the required documents listed below to the university.

  • Step 3: Scan the documents and email them to the admissions office with a subject line of 'Application for Admission' in the body of the email.

  • Step 4: Documents can be submitted only until the application deadline. Be sure to submit all documents before the final submission date.

  • Step 5: After verification of the student's documents by Medical University, the University will send the student the acceptance or rejection letter accordingly.

  • Step 6: Payment of initial fees should be done once the candidate is accepted. Upon receiving the acknowledgment letter, the student will receive their fee.

  • Step 7: Students have to do the following documentation translation, apostle attestation of the basic documents of education. 

  • Step 7: If the applicant has been accepted, they must immediately apply for a student visa . University will mail students their Invitation letters.

Hostel And Mess Facilities available at University of Malawi

University has a very good hostel campus with free Wifi access. Accommodations for students are available as singles, doubles and triples. Additionally, there are separate hostels for women and men. All hostels are furnished with beds, chairs, tables, and other necessary items. Facilities within the campus include a supermarket, a clinic, a pharmacy, etc. The hostel is monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day. For Indian students on campus, Mess is also available. All students are subject to strict hostel rules. The hostel also serves Indian food.

Much of Malawi is plateau, often reaching to 1,000m (3,000 ft), and the temperature in these highlands is moderate, with the hottest period occurring during the autumn rainy season and the coolest and chilliest in winter. The hottest region in the country is the lower Shire River Valley well south of Blantyre. Temperatures along scenic Lake Malawi are generally warm, but with a cooling breeze, especially in the evenings. Winters (May till July) are dry. The rainy season begins in mid-October to early November and generally runs until March.
