About University

The University of Pisa (Italian: Università di Pisa, UniPi) is a public research university located in Pisa, Italy. It was founded in 1343 by an edict of Pope Clement VI. It is the 19th oldest extant university in the world and the 10th oldest in Italy. The university is ranked within the top 10 nationally and the top 400 in the world according to the ARWU and the QS. It houses the Orto botanico di Pisa, Europe's oldest academic botanical garden, which was founded in 1544. 


The official birth of the University of Pisa dates back to 3 September 1343 when Pope Clement VI, with the bull "In supremae dignitatis" issued in Villanova near Avignon, granted the Studio Pisano the recognition of General Study with the teachings of theology, canon law and civil, medicine "et qualibet alia licita facultate". In 1355 followed the diploma of recognition of the emperor Charles IV. The first decades of the firm's life were certainly not easy also due to the serious economic difficulties linked to the political and social events of the city, which passed under the Visconti in 1399 and conquered by the Republic of Florence in 1406. 


In 1449 the University even ended up for be closed. Between the end of the fifteenth century and throughout the following century, the University experienced alternating phases of crisis and expansion always connected to Tuscan political events. The University of Pisa is a public institution with twenty departments, and high level research centres in the agriculture, astrophysics, computer science, engineering, medicine and veterinary medicine sectors. Furthermore the University has close relations with the Pisan Institutes of the National Board of Research, with many cultural institutions of national and international importance, and with industries, especially those based in information technology, which went through a phase of rapid expansion in Pisa during the nineteen sixties and seventies.

University has a very good hostel campus with free Wifi access. Accommodations for students are available as singles, doubles and triples. Additionally, there are separate hostels for women and men. All hostels are furnished with beds, chairs, tables, and other necessary items. Facilities within the campus include a supermarket, a clinic, a pharmacy, etc. The hostel is monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day. For Indian students on campus, Mess is also available.
